How do I Configure a New Data Feed to the NWS?

In order to configure a new data feed to the NWS, you must be the licensed Contrail owner. Our preferred method is to configure a SHEF .E output system to send data to MADIS via FTP. For SHEF .E, Contrail is setup to send Rain Increment, Gauge Height/Stage and Pool Elevation data. For Precipitation we can send 3 separate accumulation amounts: 1-minute accumulation, 5-minute accumulation, and 60-minute accumulation.

After logging into Contrail, go to the Administration environment, locate Systems, and click the + Add button. In the System panel, select the Output interface, and then select the SHEF .E via FTP System Type. Give the new System a Name and a Description, and assign ownership to a Client.

In the Attributes panel, leave the API Host and Port, Timezone, and Timezone Designator at their defaults. The Output Header should be the same as the identifier provided to you by MADIS. The Target Host will be madisinftp.ncep.noaa.gov, the Target Port 21, Destination path will be /ldad/AFWS_incoming/ (include all slashes!) and Use Passive FTP should be set to TRUE. The Username and Password will be the username and password provided to you by the NWS. Leave Log Level and Server at their default values, and Save when finished.

Next, add Sensors to the feed, by opening the Edit drop-down menu on the system's details page and select Output. On the Output page, you can use the Find (not the Search) bar to filter the list of Sensors. Check the box next to the appropriate sensors to add them to the feed.

Then, update the Output Site IDs to use the NWSLIs provided by the NWS. To do so, go back to the relevant system's details page and select the Sites tile. Locate the new Sites on the list and click the small Edit button next to each one. Update the Output to use the new IDs provided by the NWS (i.e. WBAV2). Alternatively, instead of clicking the Edit button next to each Site, click the Edit button at the top of the Sites page to edit many at once. Save when finished.

Finally, update the Output Sensor IDs to use the appropriate SHEF Codes. To do so, go back to the relevant system's details page and select the Sensors tile. Locate the new Sensors on the list and click the small Edit buttons next to each one. Update the Output to use the appropriate SHEF Codes (HG for Gage Height/Stage, HP for Pool Elevation, and PC for Rain Increment*). Alternatively, instead of clicking the Edit button next to each Site, click the Edit button at the top of the Sensors page to edit many at once. Save when finished.

* Although the PC code typically refers to Rain Accumulation, we request that, for the SHEF .E setup, PC is used for Rain Increment. Our final SHEF .E product will calculate and relabel as appropriate.
